Into the Basement: Twenty Years Later
Same plot. Same characters. Twenty years of additional craft.
A note outside the usual Tempered Signal.
Twenty years ago, I published my first novel.
Into the Basement. Ten thousand copies. Seventy-nine reviews. The book that made me a published author before I ever wrote a sentence about leadership.
A few years after it came out, the book almost became a film. The development went far enough that we produced a trailer, actor, score, atmosphere, the whole thing. Then the funding dried up and the movie didn’t happen. The trailer sat on a hard drive for almost two decades.
This year I went back to the book itself.
Not to reissue it. To rewrite it. Same plot. Same characters. Same descent. But the writer who came back to the manuscript wasn’t the one who wrote it. Twenty years of additional craft notices different things. The younger writer reached for sensation. The older one reaches for what’s underneath it. The horror is still there. So is the tension. The eroticism is restrained where it used to be loud. The psychology is loud where it used to be silent.
It’s the book the writer always meant to write.
The Twentieth Anniversary Edition of Into the Basement is live on Kindle today. Paperback in a few days. The original remains available, both versions can sit on the same shelf. The 2006 edition is what a younger writer could do. The 2026 edition is what twenty years of writing taught him about the same story.
The trailer below was made for the original. Watch what the movie might have been. Read what the book became.
Warning, this is an adult trailer, its serious horror

If you’ve followed The Tempered Signal for the systems work, this is a different room of the same house. Fiction is where I started. The frameworks came later. Both come from the same place, an interest in what people do when the pressure rises and they can’t see clearly anymore.
Chapter 1 will appear here on Substack later this week. A taste, free, no paywall. If the trailer pulls you in, the book is one click away.

WHAT THE TEMPERED SIGNAL REVIEWS
The Tempered Signal doesn't cover the news. It finds where the news is hiding the decision.
